By Sarah HannanHealth authorities continue to assure that the UK variant B.1.1.7, detected recently in Sri Lanka, has not leaked into society. We have received reports that the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is being administered at present in Sri Lanka, is effective against this variant. In a statement issued by Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Forum of Sri Lanka President Senior Consultant Paediatrician Dr. H.T. Out of those three variants, the South African variant, the Kent (UK) variant, and the Brazilian variant are a few rapidly gaining global spread. Studies done in the UK have shown that the AstraZeneca vaccine would provide immunity to the UK variant.
